This Summer has been full of excitement at Old California Coffee House & Eatery in San Marcos Ca as we were nominated as the Best Coffee Shop in San Diego for the second year in a row by 10News.com’s San Diego’s A-List. As you remember, we won this prestigious award last year and it really put Old Cal Coffee on the map as a an amazing Cafe and Music Venue. This years contest was tighter than ever this year as there were many coffee shops that want to take our title! Based on my experience in the contest last year…. I think we WON! They officially start announcing the winners Aug 27th and it takes a week for them to get all the results… If we didn’t win…. That’s OK, we did our best and that is all we can ask for…. We work very hard at Old Cal Coffee and the staff always strives to provide the best product & service in the industry. Thank you for your support. We are proud of our accomplishments either way, however we couldn’t do it without you.

I want to try to explain why winning the best coffee shop in San Diego is so important to us….

At first glance, You might think we are trying to win these contests and awards so we can brag how great we are, or charge more money or profit more…. but the truth is, the better we do as a coffee shop, the better our place gets…. For Everyone… Let me explain…

As the owners of Old Cal Coffee for the past couple of years, owning an older restaurant in an older building has its challenges. Since owning Old Cal Coffee, we’ve cleaned, scrubbed, acid washed, polished, scrapped and painted this place from top to bottom. We replaced all the old dirty fruniture with new couches, tables and chairs for your enjoyment. We’ve replaced all the old broken patio furniture & tables, so you can sit comfortably for hours and hang out and enjoy the music. We’ve done a complete remodel in the back so we can be more efficient and serve you faster. We replace an Espresso Machine that took a dump on when we moved it. We’ve added a second register at the counter so we can bust through the line, service you faster and get you on your way. We’ve hired and trained the best possible staff, so you will be treated like Kings and Queens when you come into our place! We’ve done all this without raising our drink prices and kept everything on menu under ten bucks!

It is hard to put into words how much we really appreciate all your support, but I have an idea that will allow us to show our appreciation. Before I get into our surprise, I must appologize for all the emails I sent out. We realize that we may have sent a few too many newsletters asking you to vote for us. We realize that we probably asked you to vote for us several times, even though you already voted. We realize that if we asked you to vote one more time, that it would border on harrassment & you would probably get annoyed and go somewhere else… but you hung in there with us and we really appreciate you.

To show our appreciation, we are throwing a Customer Appreciation Party on Saturday Sept 1st at Old Cal Cofee for everyone who voted for us! I am reserving the propellar room and patio area right outside the propellar room. We will have a nice spread of food for everyone to enjoy! We will have one of my favorite classic rock bands Coda playing that night… It will be a great night… We hope you will come and enjoy some food on us. It is our way of saying Thank You!

Winning the BEST COFFEE SHOP in SAN DIEGO is a HUGE HONOR. It allows us to book better bands and when I book better bands, the entertainment gets better, making your visit more enjoyable. We obviously don’t have a huge music budget, so allowing the musicians to say they play at the best coffee shop in san diego, just might be the edge we need to get them to play at our place. One of our bands is going to hit it BIG one day… I just know it and it is just a matter of time. The cool part is, we will be able to say we saw them when they were just starting to get big, when they were playing local gigs right here at Old Cal Coffee.

and for me…. That’s what I get excited about…. It’s not that I get my picture taken with a plaque again… Seriously… It’s to make our place better all the way around…
