It was a normal Friday Night when I walked in the door at Old California Coffee House & Eatery in San Marcos California until Zeb, who runs the coffee shop on weekend evenings, tells me… Like it’s no big deal… that “oh yea, by the way, the band is here and that Sharon broke her back! She’s fine and not to worry…” I said “WHAT?” I immediately go outside and talk to Russ, Sharon’s husband and he tells me the story of how Sharon was on a haystack out at farm, with the Mules…, of course right? and the haystack gave way and she fell several feet, broke her back, cracked her pelvis and it took her around 3 hours to crawl back to the house to call 911. OMG Sharon,My heart sunk thinking of you out there struggling for survival… Since that day, Sharon has had surgury and will eventually recover and be fine in 3 months or so, but she said DO NOT cancel the Old Cal Coffee gig… The Show Must go on… she says… again, this is all coming from Russ and I’m trying to remember all the details correctly, so she continues to say… don’t worry, I’ll call my daughter Alyssa from Orange County, have her come down and fill in.. it will be no problem… I was floored that they even showed up. I told Russ, man, all you had to do is call… I would have had someone fill in… NOPE, that was out of the question they said… They added how they love Old Cal Coffee and how they were honored to have a regular gig at our place… I told him we feel the same way about you, my brother Russ!
The show goes on with Russ, Steve & Kevin, but Sharon plays stand up bass and sings… so she is not easy to get someone to fill in on short notice… Alyssa sang vocals like a song bird in the spring time and Russ brought some famous Bass player from the Symphony, who I heard drove down from Central California the same day to attend our gig with Blue Mountain Mule… Amazing! Thank You Russ, Sharon, Larry G was the bass player (I think) who filled in, thank You Alyssa for singing and for driving down from Orange County to attend the gig. Your commitment, your professionalism is impeckable. The integrity of Blue Mountain Mule is so high on my list of imprtance, the way you showed up with bells on and overcame adversity, ranks highest in my book. You will always have a gig at my place and i will recommend you and Blue Mountain Mule to the world to see and hear.
I bet you are dying to hear them… right… Well, you know I had the camera with me a shot some great videos… Take a look and a listen. I think you’ll enjoy Blue Mountain Mule singing and playing Bluegrass music at Old California Coffee 7 Eatery in San Marcos Ca on Friday June 15th, 2012.
When Alyssa took the lead on this classic Blue Moutain Mule Cover of Give me One Reason, I thought Sharon was actually outside singing… take a look for yourself.
Here they are singing Shady Grove, Check it out… Oh yea, Did I mention… The place was packed! The crowd stayed the entire night. They hung on to every word, every note and every chord you played. I thought it was one of your best performances too! I think you all stepped up your game know that Sharon wouldn’t be there to carry the load, as she usually does… lol
