Girl Scouts Visit Old California Coffee House & Eatery

I received a phone call from Patti Engelhardt and she asked me if I would entertain the idea of hosting the Girl Scouts Troup 4183 of San Marcos at Old California Coffee House & Eatery! The idea was to become a barista for the day and learn about the coffee business. I thought to myself… Sure… Why not…? Come on in and we’ll have some fun! The day had arrived and I was so fortunate to have our Super Star employee Ally Jacobsen, mother of two small children and star drummer of “The Woebots” working that day. So I put Ally on the task of teacher for the day to the Girls Scouts.

Ally started off by teaching the girls about our three kinds of Hot Chocolate… We figured that the process of making hot chocolate and latte’s were similar, plus the kids had more interest in hot chocolate than they did coffee anyways. Plus, they were able to drink their creations afterwards… so that made it an easy choice. Ally taught them about our 3 kinds of Hot Chocolates! They thought… 3 kinds? Well YES, as Ally described, we server our traditional Ghirardelli Hot Chocolate, our Mexican Hot Chocolate, which is our home made recipe of adding Cinnamon and our White Chocolate hot Chocolate! As you can see from the picture… The Hot chocolate was a huge hit with the girls…

Next, we showed the girls how we baked our banana nut bread, carrot cake, cookies and many other items that we sell here at Old California Coffee House & Eatery. If you are looking for fresh baked goods to go with your great tasting coffee, then Old Cal Coffee will always have something fresh in the case, but get here early as they go fast! Ally chose to make a batch of cookies with the girls and as she is teaching the girl scouts how we do everything, she is allowing each and every girl a chance to participate. Everything from adding an ingredient, to mixing, to cracking an egg to foaming the top of the hot chocolates, they all participated! It was Awesome!

Some of the parents came to watch that day and they told me later when they were leaving that the girls had such a great time learning the coffee business. I received an email the following week too thanking me for the girls experience and she said how they all loved their day here and they kept going on and on about how much fun it was! I am happy to be part of this wonderful San Marcos community and if there is anything we can do to help, let us know…

We finished off our day and tour with some actual coffee beans, grinding them and making pots of coffee… But trust me when I tell you… the big hit was the Mexican Hot Chocolates & the Peanut Butter Cookies! Come on back anytime ladies! We loved having you here!

Here’s a short email Patti wrote a few days later…
